The collection consists of an inventory of the estate of Elizabeth Sewall and four letters. Two letters are the correspondence of Paul H. Langdon: one to his fiancee (Elizabeth Sewall) regarding his chances of advancement, quotes from a diary he has found, and obtaining leave for their wedding; and one from Brigham Young concerning a mule that strayed from Fort Laramie and might show up in Salt Lake City. A third letter, addressing "My dear Susie", is not signed or dated, regards genealogy of Lagardee, and states that Anne Lagardee becomes Mrs. Joseph Clay. A final letter addressing "My dear cousin Sarah," was written by Thomas Cumming. The letter is dated August 18, 1838, written aboard United States Navy Ship Relief, the day it departed from Hampton Roads on an expedition to Rio de Janeiro to explore and describe the resources of the islands. The letter speaks of further orders to return through the North West Coast as far as the Columbia River, and to survey islands in the Pacific, Indian Ocean, South Seas, and the Coast of Japan.
